The purpose of this camp is to engage our community members in caring for our shorelines and fisheries working towards a sustainable future. Ehuehu i ka pono (Thriving in balance) Kailapa Community Association VISION With the high dependency on imported goods and the continued disconnect our people have from our `aina (lands and oceans) there is a growing concern for the survival of our people living here on islands that are so dependent on external sources. Our vision, thriving in balance, is a testament to our desire and hope that we are striving to not simply survive but to thrive. We hope to broaden and expand on our understanding of place and find ways in which we can continually contribute to the health and wellness of Kawaihae. Our camp will strengthen our relationship to place by supporting responsible ocean dwellers/user who will continue to care for our islands. We will be strengthening the KILO or observer in each of us through various workshops on mo'olelo, fish and shoreline surveys, lifecycle and reproduction workshops, snorkeling and shoreline exploration, art and music, canoe culture, sustainable/healthy living, etc. Let's begin the journey to better understand the many moods and characteristics of South Kohala to achieve a state of `Aina Momona. Aina Momona Action Plan A desire to create and support a community of abundance and prosperity where we understand and embrace the connectivity, relationships, and dependency we have with our lands, oceans, and each other. A resilient community engaged and empowered to address the productivity of our community on all levels (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual) shifting our behaviors to be ever present, conscious, and responsive to the needs of our diverse and unique South Kohala landscapes. We envision a community moving past a want to survive to a place where we THRIVE. The camp is meant for whole families (multi generation) to participate in but we do recognize the hardship of our working parents taking a week off to participate in the entire program. We are offering families who would like to participate an option for young adults 10+ to participate in the entire program while parents are working and ask that parents participate on the non -work days/hours. (Children under 10 can join all the activities but will need adult supervision. We hope grandparents can take part and work in partnership with younger family members) Accomplishments & Achievements At the end of our camp, we hope to: • Provision our community with skills to better understand our environment so we are better prepared to adapt to the natural cycles of place. Broadening awareness and consciousness of our environment, our activities, and how they impact each other and contributing to a seasonal calendar for Kawaihae. (Huli `Ia) • Share and learn about wahi paha or storied places and explore a section of the shoreline trails learning about the many places within Kawaihae, their histories, adding to the development of a deeper relationship to place. • Provision participants with information through expanding their knowledge base on fish species, function, habitat, identification, reproduction and use. This will be accomplished through teaching tools, such as ID posters, getting in the water and exploring the shallow reef system of Kawaihae, removing some reef fish for dissection and consumption, and working with resources who specialize in reproduction, fish behavior, harvesting, and management. • Provide an opportunity for participants to develop a deeper relationship and appreciation of Kawaihae and build upon their love for the ocean, for our `aina (sustenance), for our community, and for our island. Please fill out the attached registration form. There will be a registration & workshop fee of $20. All meals and supplies will be covered by our event sponsors.
