Congratulations to Jodie Torres on her recent

Community Service Program Assistant since 2012.

CSE and AARP collaborates once again to
offer Tax Preparation Services to our Low
Income Seniors who need help in filing their 2017 tax returns.

Offers
Home Repair Loans
The Office of Housing and Community
Development is currently accepting
applications to its’ Residential Repair
Program (RRP).
The RRP is a low interest loan program
available to eligible low-and moderate-income
homeowners who are interested in repairing
and improving their primary residence.
The RRP loan can be used for, but not
limited to, roof repairs, electrical and
plumbing work, sewer improvements,
termite treatment, repairs to damages caused by
termites or wood rot and the installation
of a solar water heating system. In addition,
it could be used for home modifications
to meet the needs of a person with disabilities.
Loans range from $2,500 to $25,000 at
3% simple interest. Loan payments are
deferred for 15 years, at which time full
payment will be due. Applicants 62 years
or older or with persons with a disability,
may be eligible to have 30% of the principal
balance of the loan forgiven at end of the loan period.

success that it is. So far, we have created over 150 classes that
are offered island wide and have created a variety of excellent events

2017 Akamai Living Fair
The Elderly Activities Division and HMSA sponsored the “Akamai Living Fair” in East Hawai‘i & West
Hawai‘i. On October 20th at the Tennis Stadium in Hilo, approx. 600 seniors were provided flu &
pneumonia shots by KTA pharmacy, cholesterol and glucose tests by Clinical Labs, and over 50 health
organizations with information for a smart, healthier living. On November 3rd over 250 participants
attended the West Hawai‘i Civic Center which had over 30 vendors. A first for the program were
Breakout Sessions held by UH Extension Agent Julia Zee and Franny Brewer from BI Invasive
Species Committee. Master Gardener Bill Miller, Blue Zone West Hawai‘i and HMSA’s Pete Cline
spoke on Healthy Movements at any age. Lots of helpful information and free medical services
were provided for the community to stay healthy!

Ka‘ū District Summer Picnic was held on “solar eclipse day” at the Punalu‘u Black Sand Beach.
No birthday celebration is complete for the Kona Seniors without a delicious cake!

ERS Events
2017 Casino Day was held in Pāhala, Ka‘ū in the new gym facility.
There was about 195 seniors that came from around the island to join
in the fun of Casino day. The seniors got to enjoy games, each others
company and lunch from Punalu‘u Bakery.
7 seniors were awarded prizes and it was based on how many chips
they won throughout the event.
Another successful event for our seniors.
This year the spooks came out to Yano Hall to take part in the
annual Ground Golf Spooktacular. Goblins and Ghouls from
Kohala, Waimea, Waikoloa, North and South Kona gathered in
friendly competition to see which team could claim the top spot
after 8 holes of ground golf. Participants also vied for top prize in
the longest putt competition as well as the costume contest.

Aunty Sally’s Nutrition and Pōmaika‘i’s
Senior club got together for their annual
Halloween Party. The costumes were
creative and fun and the seniors enjoyed
lots of games and a great lunch!
Kamana’s Annual Halloween party was filled with awesome entertainment,
costumes, and the large amounts of onolicious food that was served. It was
a fun filled nite with great company!

35 Years of Music Hula and Memories
2017 Kupuna Hula Festival
18 halaus, from Japan, Okinawa, California, Maui,
Moloka‘i, O‘ahu and the Big Island, gathered to celebrate this
year’s theme ‘O Ke One Kaulana O Kahelelani A I Nā ‘Ala
Onaona o Kamawaelualani, celebrating the unique places and
traits of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau. The Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa
hosted both the competition and craft fair on September 13-14th.
Over 1,000 people attended the two day festival to watch
the 18 halaus compete for top prizes in 6 categories. The
individual Tutu Wahine and Tutu Kane dances took place on
Wednesday night, followed by the group competitions in the Mixed,
Wahine, Kane and Overall categories on Thursday night.
During each performance, 5 judges rated the dancers
on overall appearance, presentation, hand gestures and
costumes, among other categories, using a 5-10 point scale.
The top three winners in each of the competitions received prizes
generously donated by local sponsors: First Hawaiian Bank, Big Island
Candies, Kukio Resorts, LLC., Akamai Photo, Hawai‘i Island Festivals,
County of Hawai‘i Parks and Recreation Elderly Activities Division, and
the Kupuna Hula Festival.
This year’s individual winners included; third place in the Kane
category Makana Satou, Hula Halau O Pua Loke, second place; Michael Foley
dancing with Na Kupuna O Kohala, and first place individual Kane winner from
Na Kupuna O Moana; Allen Diorec.
The individual Wahine winners were; third place Natsuko Arai performing
for Japan’s Ka Pa Hula O
Keolananilehua, second place; Kailua Kona’s Denise Bigelow from Halau Kala‘akeakauikawekiu.
First place Wahine dancer from Moloka‘i was Na Kupuna O Moana’s Haunani Kamakana.
Thursday night’s Kane group winners were; third place Hula Halau O Pua Loke,
second place; Na Kupuna O Moana, and first place Kane group winners from Kapa‘au were Na
Kupuna O Kohala.
Third place in the group Wahine division was, Hula Halau O Kawananakoa from Hilo.
Second place awards went to Kona’s Halau Kala‘akeakauikawekiu, and first place winners
from Kailua Kona, Halau Hula Na Pua U‘i O
Hawai‘i.
The third place halau in the mixed group competition was Hula Halau O Pua Loke; second place;
Na Kupuna O Kohala, and the overall mixed group winner, Na Kupuna O Moana.
The title of overall group winner was awarded to long-time entrants from Kaunakakai,
Na Kupuna O Moana.
The 36th Annual Hawai‘i Kupuna Hula Festival is tentatively scheduled for
September 12-13, 2018 at the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa.

The “RSVP Pāpale Makers” are a group of RSVP Volunteers who are knitting and crocheting
Beanie caps for newborn infants and other hospital patients. So far they have donated over
200 to Hilo Medical Center and are in the process of donating more to North Hawai‘i Community
Center and Kona Community Hospital.

On behalf of our Nutrition Program, we would like to give our Meals on Wheels volunteer driver
Norman Kiso a very BIG Mahalo for all of the hours he put into helping our program
deliver meals to our seniors. Norman has been a volunteer for 20 plus years and we appreciate
all the time he has dedicated towards helping our program. Norman will be greatly missed and
we wish him nothing but the best in his up coming plans.

HERE'S THE NEWS
On October 26, 2017 the Big Island Workplace Connection Job and
Resource Fair was held at Edith Kanaka‘ole Tennis Stadium in Hilo
and attracted over 30 applicants to STEP. One of our program members
was hired within a week of the job fair and most of our members filled out multiple
applications for many of the businesses on site.
STEP Participant, Veronica Skelly filled out job applications from various business.
There was 85 participating Vendors. Veronica also won one of many prizes donated
by the businesses in attendance.
STEP Participant, Michael Lytwynic was among the 450 job seekers.
A special thanks to the Big Island Workplace Connection for
providing opportunities for our Big Island residents to
connect with local business owners and operators.
The Senior Training & Employment Program (STEP) assists eligible, unemployed, low-income job seekers
age 55 and over in getting temporary but current work experience.
STEP helps Seniors receive training to allow them to return to the workforce at large.
It provides temporary, paid, part-time work experience in community service.
