Ms. Carilyn Shon, Administrator
Hawaii State Energy Office
Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism
235 S. Beretania Street, 5th Floor
Honolulu, HI 96813
Dear Ms. Shon:
The County of Hawaii enthusiastically supports the Department of Business, Economic
Development and Tourism's ("DBEDT") proposal to the Federal Highway Administration
("FHWA"), U.S. Department of Transportation ("DOT"), for the nomination of electric vehicle
("EV")charging infrastructure corridors on the Island of Hawaii.
The State of Hawaii has an ambitious goal of achieving 100%renewable energy in the
electricity sector by 2045, and the Island of Hawaii leads the State in that transformation.
Likewise, we fully support the transition to renewable transportation. We have incorporated EVs
into our fleet and installed charging stations at our facilities, and we see EVs as a key component
of an integrated grid-transportation system.
Our residents and businesses are equally enthused about EVs. The Big Island Electric
Vehicle Association was formed to increase the adoption of sustainable transportation and reduce
fossil energy dependence, and four auto dealers sell five EV models on island.
The County of Hawaii has jurisdiction over portions of the proposed EV charging
corridor, and we intend to actively collaborate with the State Energy Office (DBEDT) to advance
EV penetration on the Island of Hawaii.
Sincerely,
Harry im
Mayor
