Dear Chair Mizuno and Committee Me bers:
Re: HB 2732, HD 1 Relating to Puako Coral Reefs
Hearing Date: 02/14/18 — 8:30 am; House Conference Room 329
Thank you for this opportunity to support the intent of HB 2732, HD I, seeking to
address contamination near Puako on the Big Island.
Puako is an especially beautiful part of Hawaii. Once a largely unknown and
undeveloped shoreline area where, during our lifetime, lots sold for a couple of hundred
dollars each, Puako has fallen victim to its own success, to the point where its
magnificent coral reefs are jeopardized.
1 leave it to others to decide whether a study group is the best approach to the
near -shore water problems, or what the make-up of such a group should be. Whatever
your decision, the County will gladly participate in an effort to find solutions.
Respectfully submitted,
