Affordable Housing Options Arrive In East Hawai‘i
Hawaiian Habitats Foundation Inc. (HHFI) has worked tirelessly to find housing solutions for
working class families and individuals living and working on the Big Island of Hawai‘i and
throughout the state. The organization is pleased to announce the ribbon-cutting ceremony for
their first build. This beautiful 2-bedroom/1-bathroom home is in the Ainaloa subdivision, just
outside Pāhoa.
With 600 square feet of living space and a total 840 square feet, this brand-new home includes
all major appliances, as well as a water catchment and septic system. HHFI hosted an event on
February 10, 2018 to celebrate their initiative aimed at tackling the lack of affordable housing for
the residents of Hawai'i Island. Attendees included Senator Russell Ruderman, Mayor Harry
Kim, members of the Hawaii County Council, and other Hawaii County dignitaries.
Homeownership is the cornerstone of providing safety and security for every family's financial
future. The median home price on Hawai'i Island has exceeded $350,000, and is steadily rising.
This makes purchasing a home almost impossible for most low-income and working class
individuals and families in our community.
Purchasing in areas with affordable land prices and building to the minimum County size
requirements are part of the solution to our housing crisis. Utilizing these two options and
combining them with zero-down loan programs can make homeownership attainable for most
individuals and families that have a full-time income.
