The following is a list of best practices for County of Hawai'i as determined by the information found
in the Certified Blue Zones Worksite Assessment Report. These best practices are tailored to the
County's unique environment. After you identify pledge actions to complete and have signed the
Executive Summary, please follow the detailed how and why information (starting on page 10)and
document your activities along the way. This documentation is an important component of the
validation document due at the end of the project.
MANDATORY PLEDGES:
1. Host an all-company Blue Zones Project kickoff event.
2. All executive leaders and 25 percent of people leaders must complete a Leading for Well-Being
workshop.
3. All minimum Blue Zones Project engagement metrics must be met, including 1,361 employees
must sign the Blue Zones Project Personal Pledge, 1,361 employees must complete the annual
digital survey, 680 employees must participate in and complete a 10-week Moai, and 680 em-
ployees must attend a Purpose Workshop that includes volunteer opportunities.
WORK COMMUNITY
Select four of six:
❑ Engage nearby restaurants to improve the food environment around your worksite. Work with
at least five restaurants and eateries within walking distance of the Aupuni Street location to
become Blue Zones Project Approved.
❑ Create a community supported agriculture(CSA) program with vendors and local farmers to sell
fresh produce to employees at the Aupuni Street location.
❑ Work with state government employees to establish a weekly farmers market or open market
on state office property next door to the Aupuni Street location.
❑ Implement a comprehensive transportation policy.
❑ Connect with the community by creating volunteer opportunities.
❑ Promote the walkability of routes near COI I grounds.
SOCIAL NETWORK

❑ Leverage existing communication methods to highlight Blue Zones Project events and activities.
❑ Develop a company-wide well-being advisory committee that meets monthly. Host a series of
plant-based cooking classes that consists of 4-6 classes each quarter.

❑ Offer and promote ongoing COH-sponsored activities that support natural movement and team
building.
❑ Implement an activity that regularly connects employees with leaders and department heads.
❑ Offer bi-weekly cooking classes and healthy food demonstrations.
❑ Create a community garden at the Aupuni Street location or on county building grounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Select six of eight:
❑ Develop a well-being brand and campaign through which best practices and success stories
are shared.
❑ Adopt and enforce a tobacco-free-campus policy(including use of e-cigarettes).
❑ Adopt and enforce a healthy vending policy that meets Blue Zones Project Healthy Food Guidelines.
❑ Create environmental and policy changes in the food environment that make the healthy choice
the easy choice.
❑ Create environmental and policy changes that promote natural movement at COH facilities.
❑ Hold three COH-sponsored well-being events per year.
❑ Explore and identify easily accessible areas that can be repurposed for use by all employees.
❑ Schedule ergonomic education classes.
PURPOSE
Select two of three:
❑ Offer ongoing onsite developmental workshops, seminars, and/or lunch-and-learns to all
employees.
❑ Create a consistent mission statement and communicate it clearly to all employees.
❑ Administer a personality assessment to all new employees to establish meaningful and purposeful
connections between new hires and the COH culture of well-being.

becoming a Certified Blue Zones Worksite.We recognize that creating a culture of well-being takes
leadership, time, resources, and the appropriate budget. We commit to allocating these resources as
