PROCEDURE PURPOSE <br /> <br />a. To ensure consistent application of prescriptive braced wall requirements. <br /> <br />II. RELEVANT LAW <br /> <br />a. Hawaii County Code Chapter 5 and International Building & Residential <br />Codes (IBC, IRC 2006 ed.) <br /> <br />III. SUMMARY OF LAWS <br /> <br />a. Section R602.10.11.1 (IRC), Braced wall line spacing. <br />Spacing between braced wall lines in each story shall not exceed 25 feet <br />on center in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. <br />Exception: In one- and two-story buildings, spacing between two <br />adjacent braced wall lines shall not exceed 35 feet on center in order to <br />accommodate one single room not exceeding 900 square feet in each <br />dwelling unit. Spacing between all other braced wall lines shall not <br />exceed 25 feet. <br />Summary: When using the exception to allow one 900 square foot open <br />room, the length of braced wall lines must be measured across the entire <br />length of the structure, including the exempt room. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />County of Hawai’i is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer. <br /> <br />
