HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-05-17 Eruption Update for 0700 AM CIVIL DEFENSE AGENCY Date: May 17, 2018 MEDIA UPDATE Time: 7 AM Update: #1 Incident: East Rift Zone Eruption This is a Civil Defense Message for Thursday, May 17 at 7 a.m. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has advised of an explosive eruption at Kilauea summit that occurred at 4:17 a.m. This eruption is generating an ash plume as high as 25,000 feet. The resulting ash plume may affect the surrounding areas. The wind may carry the ash plume north towards Ka’u, Volcano, Mt. View, Kea’au and as far as Hilo. National Weather Service has issued an ashfall advisory until 12 p.m. Due to elevated sulfur dioxide (S0) levels, Pahoa High, Intermediate, and Elementary School Complex, 2 Keonepoko Elementary, Hawaii Academy of Arts and Science, Volcano School of Arts and Science will be closed. County, State and Federal partners continue to monitor the situation. You will be informed of any conditions that affect your safety. Thank you for listening. Have a safe day.
