HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-06-18 Eruption Update for 0600 CIVIL DEFENSE AGENCY DATE: June 18, 2018 MEDIA UPDATE TIME: 6:00 AM UPDATE: #1 Incident: East Rift Zone Eruption This is a Civil Defense Message for Monday, June 18 at 6:00 in the morning. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports an explosion at the Kilauea Summit. The energy is like a 5.3 magnitude earthquake. No tsunami expected. Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports Fissure 8 continues to be very active with a fast moving channelized flow entering the ocean at Kapoho Bay. The vent is producing a large SO2 plume and a large laze plume at the ocean entry. Seismic activity continues at Kilauea Summit. On the Leilani Eruption: 5,914 acres or nine and a quarter square miles of land has now been impacted. 533 homes have been destroyed. Numerous resources are available to residents of Hawai‘i County who suffered damage or losses from the Kilauea volcanic eruption and recent earthquakes: A Disaster Recovery Center or DRC, is open daily from 8am to 8pm, and is located at the Keaau High School Gym. Today, Tuesday and Wednesday, free medical, dental and eye care will be available at “Tropic Care 2018” at Kea’au High School. Additional screening days are scheduled during the coming weeks.
