LAND FUND
Commission Members:
I regret I will be off-island on Friday, when Commissioners will hold a vote on the amount of property tax
money that will be set aside for purchase of high priority open space land. If I were able to attend
the Commission meeting on Friday, I would testify to urge Commissioners to vote in favor of the full 2%
amount, per year. Please note this is the rate approved by voters in the election three years ago. It is
inappropriate for Commissioners to negate that mandate from the People.
For reasons that I find arbitrary and thoughtless, Commissioners voted earlier to reduce the amount of
money set aside per year to be 1/2 of 1%. Commissioners must know their action is contrary to proper
democratic practice. It is irritating to our sensibilities as voters, and it promotes cynicism and disrespect
for public officials. It is my hope that Commissioners will correct their earlier decision and vote to restore
the fund to the full 2% that was approved by an unusually robust proportion of voters.
