HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMM. 256.001 Ad Hoc Committee on Education reportReport of the Ad Hoc Committee on Education The Ad Hoc Committee on Education met on May 28, 2010 to discuss ideas regarding educating the public about the proposed charter amendments prior to the November election. All committee members attended the meeting. After some follow-up work by individual committee members, the committee unanimously recommends the following: (1) A pamphlet summarizing the proposed amendments in clear and concise language be produced and widely distributed throughout the island and be placed on the websites for the Charter Commission, the County Council, the Mayor’s office, and the Office of Elections, with distribution occurring after the primary election but prior to distribution of the absentee ballots, which is early October. Hire a firm to publish the pamphlet and develop a brand for it. (2) The Commission ask the League of Women Voters to draft proposed language for the pamphlet that would be reviewed, finalized, and voted on by the Commission. (3) Commission members, in pairs or groups of three, make presentations to community groups regarding the proposed amendments; each member would participate in a few presentations. (4) Disseminate information through traditional news media and political blogs. (5) Tap high school and college students to stimulate interest in the amendments by having them develop PSAs, perhaps through a contest.
