Kawili Street Honolulu, HI 96822 Hilo, HI 96720 Dear Mr. Lassner & Ms. Sakai, I deeply appreciate the opportunity to suggest qualified persons to fill vacancies on the Maunakea Management Board. I apologize for this late response and hope this is still timely. You are well aware of the committee I have formed to advise the Governor on a vision for Maunakea. It would definitely complement this mission if selective members of this vision committee could also sit on the Management Board to implement the vision. I would like to recommend the following two members of the vision committee who have demonstrated to me their passion, strength of values, eloquence, and ability to listen on matters relating to Maunakea: • Kalepa (Chad) Baybayan. Kalepa first sailed on Hokule'a in 1975 and has sailed on all major Hokule'a voyages since. He currently serves as the Navigator in Residence at the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai'i developing wayfinding activities, curriculum materials, and conducting outreach. • Kepa Maly. Kepa is a respected expert on historical and ethnographic studies and very knowledgeable about the cultural values of Maunakea. I would like to also recommend an impressive educator whom I have recently met. His name is Kilohana (Aaron) Hirano. Aaron is the East Hawai'i Regional Director for Kamehameha Schools. Born and raised in Hilo, Aaron holds a bachelor's degree in Hawaiian studies with close to 20 years of educator experience. I realize the final decision on the selection of the board members rests with others. But I sincerely thank you for the opportunity to recommend persons of character for this important role influencing the future of Maunakea. Yours truly, Harry K irhY Mayor County of Hawai i is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer
