Although Ms. Fan was not born and raised in Hawaii, she had embraced the spirit of Aloha, and is a most respectful interpreter of Hawaiian traditions. With this book, Ms. Fan helps illustrate the vibrant meaning of the protocols and artistry behind the Lei, an ancient art form. Ms. Fan shows how the traditions of lei -making foster appreciation and love of the `aina, nature and our island home, while encouraging stewardship and the responsible use of natural materials. I hope the readers of this book, published in Chinese, will help spread the joyous word of Hawaii Nei to a wide audience. Aloha, Harry Kim MAYOR County of Hawai`i is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer.
