Dear Mr. Berman,
RE: Honoka'a Park
Thank you for your letter, and your efforts at Honoka'a Park. Since the
Department of Parks and Recreation (P&R) entered into the Friends of Honoka'a Park
(Friends) agreement, there has been thoughtful dialogue and a sincere effort at
Honoka'a Park to reduce the applications of herbicide. Per the agreement, there are no
herbicides being used in the areas where the Friends do their work.
Ms. Suber has met with P&R administration and maintenance personnel, and
they are working together to build a positive and long-lasting relationship. Over the past
year, P&R has used herbicide alternatives at Honoka'a Park, such as vinegar based
solutions, salt water solutions, and burning the weeds on the track using hand-held
propane tanks. They are also working with Ms. Suber in an effort to control weeds with
other natural, non-toxic alternatives, like Avenger Optima and Dr. Earth Final Stop. The
County will continue to work with the Friends of Honoka'a Park, as we are greatly
appreciative of your efforts to keep Honoka'a Park a beautiful place to visit, and P&R
will continue to be cognizant toward the minimal use of all herbicides.
Thank you for your care of our beautiful island.
Sincerely,
Harry Kim
