Subject: Leave 2% for Land fund Charter Amendment as voters designated
Aloha Charter Commissioners, Council Members and Mayor,
I urge you to support keeping the Land Fund Charter Amendment at 2%.
I oppose specifically:
Comm. 21 which proposes CA -7 which
Repeals and replaces the Land Fund at .75% and
Deletes the clause that protects the lands acquired by the 2% Land Fund in
perpetuity
• Places the Maintenance Fund in the Hawaii County Code where it can be defunded
at the whim of the Mayor and Council.
I do favor strengthening the fund by dedicating a staff person for the Maintenance Fund to be proposed in January:
Comm. 7.6- Our proposed changes to strengthen the fund by providing a salary for a full
time staff person to work only on the 2% Land Fund program and paid for by the Land
Fund
THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN 3 TIMES! By Ballot no less. Please respect our wishes, do not waste time, taxpayer $$ trying
to undermine or negate our wishes. We do want maintenance and staff. Focus on that aspect and purchasing properties
with available funds. Keep the 2% For Land Fund in tact as created By the People and For the People.
This past month I had friends visiting from the mainland. I took them to Kawa, Honuapo, and I took a Sierra Club Group
to O'oma this year and it is a great addition to public access parks. I testified in 2010 to not develop that parcel and it is
so rewarding to now see a beautiful coastal park. The idea of selling any of these purchased properties is repugnant and
would create an uproar throughout the island.
Please advocate more areas such as Pohue Bay and watershed areas be purchased with funds available. Pohue Bay is so
important to preserve for cultural/natural resources rather than another proposed development. Access by hiking the
"traditional" trail is now being blocked by owners.
