Dear Ms. Bonk:
Thank you for your letter of January 15, 2019 regarding the Old Hilo Jail, which is
under State jurisdiction and has not housed inmates since 1978.
You may have seen news coverage on January 10, 2019 regarding the
ceremony to begin the demolition of the facility, attended by the Department of Public
Safety and other officials. The demolition work has begun this week and it will culminate
early next month with the takedown of the building.
The demolition of the old structure, which as condemned in the early 2000's, will
make room for development of new jail facilities to alleviate overcrowding.
I understand that although the State Department of Public Safety tried to find
parties to relocate and preserve the building, no one came forward because of the high
cost of moving and renovating a building of its size.
/ Thank you very much for taking the time to write to me.
Th t.& / A it,
Harry Kim
