Jada Cathcart
6th grade
Volcano School of Arts and Sciences
Volcano Hawaii 96785
February 7, 2019
Dear Charter Commision
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Aloha Commissioners,
My name is Jada Cathcart , the daughter of Sheena and Crystal Cathcart.
I'm a sixth grader at Volcano School of Arts and Sciences. I'm happy that I
get to go to Kawa twice a month. When I am at Kawa, I feel comforted by
the wind and waves. We work with Na mamo o Kawa with Kumu James
Akau, Uncle Kaui Felder, and Uncle Duane and Auntie Clarissa Pua.
I learn to work and have fun. We learn patience by moving driftwood
and rocks to prevent beach erosion. Before we ground the plants we give it
our ha, or our breath to make sure that the plant grows and thrives. We
learn to identify natives as well as plant them. Through the months I have
seen great change and I want to see this endless beauty with my own
children and keep this legacy alive. I want my children to aloha aina
because the things you do for for the land the land will do for you .
63% of voters in 2006 voted for the 2% land fund, then in 2010 with
60% and again in 2012 with 63%. Please use the fund money to buy
Waikapuna for our children of the future. The Big Island is vastly full of
untouched, native landmarks and need to be taken care of to thrive unlike
Oahu and Kauai that have been taken over by man-made, fake artifacts.
I hope Kawa will be funded because so far tourists have not touched,
vandalized, or even manhandled native artifacts like the Ke'eku heiau.
Comm. No. 21.125
