Subject: Support for CA -9 and CA -18: Strengthening the 2% Land Fund and Maintenance Fund
I support strengthening the Land Fund by having AT LEAST one full-time staff person (really, it should be more than
one 1!!) who ONLY works on the 2% Land Fund Program, supported by the Land Fund itself. There are wonderful
people volunteering all over the island to preserve our important green spaces, and dedicated full-time staff would be a
very helpful way to get the Land Fund monies used more quickly, as the voters and residents of Hawaii Island intended.
Our children and grandchildren will thank you! Also I support the Amendment CA -18 that proposes the Maintenance
Fund be administered by the Dept. of Finance, with oversight by PONC. Getting matching funds, organizing volunteers,
establishing non -profits take lots of time and talent, but there are many people on Hawaii Island already doing these
things as volunteers. With the County helping to lead these efforts with paid, knowledgeable staff, we can do amazing
things to keep our Island livable, sustainable, and beautiful, and keep green open spaces for people to recreate and
nature to flourish.
