Activate Puna is a community revitalization and pono placemaking project that brings people together for experiences around art, food and music throughout 2019. The activation shines a deliberate light on Puna's unique culture and characteristics, and drives local economy by providing entrepreneurs, creatives, tastemakers, musicians and performers a platform to showcase their talents and stories. The May 11 block party takes place in Pahoa Town from 4-10pm, along Mainstreet. It's a celebration of how our community has come together — and is still going — one year after the Kilauea eruption. The event features a variety of experiences: mural unveils, art installations, creative vendor pop -ups, food trucks, and two stages of entertainment to include live music, dance, short films, storytelling. Vendor pop -ups will be placed within the street closure area, planned for between Akeakamai Loop and Kauhale Street. The street closure will make for a safe and enjoyable walkable experience throughout Pahoa Town, allowing attendees to shop the town and curated marketplace — but all in a way to encourage one to "Think, Act and Buy Local." While there is no fee to participate, vendors are asked to make a contribution based on a portion of their market sales (10-15% of earnings). All event proceeds will go to Puna -based organizations that deliver programs and services that uplift the Puna community, including, but not limited to: Mainstreet Pahoa Association, Bodacious Women, Malama o Puna, and The Pahoa Schools Foundation. Your support is appreciated as the community rebuilds and recovers as a result of the 2018 Puna lava flow.
