From: David Holbrook
To: LPCtestimonv
Cc: "Holbrook. Dave"
Subject: Discussion on STVR
Date: Monday,April 1, 2024 9:05:33 AM
To Whom it may concern,
My partner and I own a home in East Hawaii. We have lived here for 16 years. The home is two
story. We started renting the second story as a way to help us make ends meet. We switched
to a minimum of 31 nights rental to comply with Hawaii County regs as we understand them.
Now, you want to take away our ability to use our upstairs as a rental legally? This is very
unfair. We live here full time, live in the dwelling, pay the excise and transient tax for the rental
income, and our home is located in a very rural area with no neighbors. We will not make the
space a full-time rental as this would not allow us the flexibility to offer the space to family and
friends who would come and visit. This is our home and we should have the right to do with it
as we please, without the County or State of Hawaii dictating how or who we invite to stay in
our home. As we grow older, I am over 70 and my partner is approaching 70, this income will
be more important to surviving our old age. Is the Planning Department and Hawaii County
really going to make life more difficult for our kupuna?
The people and companies who live out of state or off island and just want to make money
here, while shrinking available housing are the ones who need to be regulated. Especially
those who have invaded our high-density residential neighborhoods.
Thank you,
David Holbrook
808-640-4911
Bonnie Soares
808-895-1382
