Kua 0 Ka La
y New Century Publica i f
Aloha Windward Planning Commissioners,
My name is Ikaika Rodenhurst and I am the current Governing Board Chair for Kua O Ka La New
Century Charter School. I previously served the County of Hawaii as the Director of the
Department of Public Works and currently work as a construction management consultant. I am
also a parent for my child in grade 2 at Kua O Ka La.
As such, I am vested in the long term success of this important community school. The
Governing Board is informed on a monthly basis on all aspects of the short and long term
relocation and recovery efforts of our school by School Founder and Development Director Susie
Osborne.
We were able bring the facility into full compliance in order to operate a school in this location
including building, fire, and ADA codes. The use permits were already in place as Connections
Charter School had been at this site in 2002 for many years.
Nani Mau Cindy Cui then executed a Development and Acquisition Agreement with our
supporting non-profit Ho'oulu Lahui. This requires rezoning our current site from Ag 10 to Ag 5,
then subdividing those 5 acres.
This acquisition will ensure that our school has a permanent home and is able to provide high
quality public education for generations. Over the past 6 years, we have become very settled in
our Pana'ewa location, with school gardens and playgrounds all in place.
Mahalo for your consideration of this Rezone application before you today.
Sincerely,
G
St ven Ikaika Rodenhurst, PE
