<br />KAILUA VILLAGE DESIGN COMMISSION <br />COUNTY OF HAWAI‘I <br /> <br />MINUTES <br /> <br />Meeting Date: February 19, 2013 <br />Time: 5:17 p.m. <br />Place: West Hawai‘i Civic Center <br />nd <br />Planning Department Conference Room – Building E, 2 Floor <br /> 74-5044 Ane Keohokālole Highway <br />Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i, 96740 <br /> <br />CALL TO ORDER <br /> <br />Commissioners Present: Shane Kitchens, Fanny Au Hoy, Paul Bleck, Nancy Burns, <br />John Hetherington and Alvin Akina, Jr. (from 5:22 p.m.) <br />Absent and Excused: Theresa Andreae, Adam Broderson and Sammie Stanbro <br />Applicants/Representatives: Patrick Mitchell and Al Muro <br />Planning Department: Rosalind Newlon, Keola Childs and Noriko Sauer <br /> <br />A quorum was present. Chair Kitchens called the meeting to order and the Commissioners <br />introduced themselves. The Chair moved that approval of the minutes of the December 18, 2012, <br />meeting be placed to the end of the agenda. The motion was seconded by Commissioner <br />Hetherington and unanimously carried by a voice vote of all Commissioners in attendance. <br /> <br />STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC ON AGENDA ITEMS <br /> - No statements were presented <br />under this section of the agenda. <br /> <br />NEW BUSINESS <br /> <br />1. Design review of a sign permit application for a proposed marquee sign for Patricio’s <br />Taqueria. Applicant: Patrick Mitchell. Land Owners: Pres-Kona Coast LP and Queen <br />Lili‘uokalani Trust. TMK: 7-4-015:001. Located in the Kona Coast Shopping Center at <br />74-5586 Palani Road, Kailua-Kona, on the northwest corner of Queen Ka’ahumanu Hwy. <br />and Palani Road. <br /> <br /> <br />Mr. Childs described the proposed marquee sign, and went over the applicant’s submittal, including <br />site plans and sign specifications. He noted that although the sign area, lettering and logo sizes or <br />the proposed material did not follow the Sign Code or the Signage Criteria, Guidelines for Review <br />in the Master Plan for Kailua-Kona, the proposed sign complied with a blanket sign variance <br />granted for the entire shopping center in 1999. <br /> <br />The applicant, Patrick Mitchell, presented additional information on the proposed design. In <br />response to Commissioner Hetherington’s question, he said that the sign would be mounted directly <br />on the existing marquee as is, which had been used by the previous tenant. <br /> <br />1 <br /> <br />
