<br />KAILUA VILLAGE DESIGN COMMISSION <br />COUNTY OF HAWAI‘I <br /> <br />MINUTES <br /> <br />Meeting Date: September 3, 2013 <br />Time: 5:20 p.m. <br />Place: West Hawai‘i Civic Center <br />nd <br />Planning Department Conference Room – Building E, 2 Floor <br /> 74-5044 Ane Keohokālole Highway <br />Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i, 96740 <br /> <br />CALL TO ORDER <br /> <br />Commissioners Present: John Hetherington, Theresa Andreae, Fanny Au Hoy, Adam Broderson, <br />Shane Kitchens and Sammie Stanbro <br />Absent and Excused: Alvin Akina, Jr., Paul Bleck and Nancy Burns <br />Applicants/Representatives: Robin Bailey and Malia Bolton <br />Planning Department: Bennett Mark, Keola Childs and Noriko Sauer <br /> <br />A quorum was present. Chair Hetherington called the meeting to order and the Commissioners <br />introduced themselves. It was moved by Commissioner Stanbro and seconded by Commissioner <br />Au Hoy that approval of the minutes of the August 20, 2013, meeting be moved to the end of the <br />agenda. The motion was unanimously carried by a voice vote of all Commissioners in attendance. <br /> <br />STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC ON AGENDA ITEMS <br /> – There was no one from the <br />public in attendance. <br /> <br />NEW BUSINESS <br /> <br />1. Design review of a sign permit application for a proposed wall sign for “Law Offices of <br /> Darl C. Gleed & Associates LLC.” Applicant: Jeremy Neill of Neill Sign and Design. Land <br />Owner: Walua Holdings Ltd. PSHP. TMK: 7-5-018:094. Located at 75-5905 Walua Road, <br />Kailua-Kona, and fronting both Kuakini Highway and Walua Road. Proposed sign faces <br />Kuakini Highway. <br /> <br /> <br />Mr. Childs oriented the Commission of the subject and surrounding properties on aerial and site <br />photographs, and described the proposed wall sign. He mentioned that the Commission had reviewed <br />and approved a similar sign on the same building at its last meeting on August 20, 2013. He said that <br />the applicant had revised his original proposal, which would have required a variance from the Sign <br />Code. He noted that based on the referral memorandum from the Department of Public Works, <br />Building Division, this revised design met the Sign Code requirements, and that its design and <br />coloration also appeared to comply with the Signage Criteria Guidelines for Review in the Master <br />Plan for Kailua-Kona. <br /> <br />The applicant was not present, but his client’s representative, Robin Bailey, was in attendance.
