Communication No. 2014 -12
Re: Request to testify before the Hawaii County Council as a representative of the Action
Committee of the Puna Community Development Plan.
When County Council Representative Brenda Ford (Volcano, Ka'u) became aware of the issues
of connectivity that we are addressing in Puna, particularly in the Volcano area, she immediately
responded with a commitment to work within the County to assist the Puna communities in
finding and effecting solutions to our connectivity issues.
Representative Ford will be making a proposal this month that the County Council approve a
resolution allowing for the formation of an ad -hoc committee to address Puna connectivity. All
four County Representatives who represent parts of Puna, Greggor Ilagan, Zendo Kern, Dennis
Onishi and Brenda Ford, plus representatives from Civil Defense, Fire Department, Public
Works and Planning Departments, Marlene Hapai and Patti Pinto would make up the Ad Hoc
Committee. Because of Sunshine Laws, our four Council members would be prohibited from
working together on Puna connectivity unless they were on an official Ad -Hoc Committee
dedicated to that purpose.
Marlene (as chair of the Subcommittee on Connectivity and Emergency Response) and I are
seeking your approval of our request to testify before the Hawaii County Council in support of
this resolution as representatives of the Action Committee of the Puna Community Development
Plan.
Patti Pinto and Marlene Hapai
