MOUNTAIN VIEW VILLAGE CENTER PLAN
WORKING GROUPS MEETING
AUGUST 8,2013, 6:OOPM,MOUNTAIN VIEW SCHOOL CAFETERIA
In attendance: Frank Commendador,Patti Pinto, Susan Langer, Clyde Shiraki, Sarah Shiraki, John Owen, Dan Taylor,
Nadine Robertson,Mark Robertson,Neena Roumell, Terry Daun, Sharon Daun,Heidi Hutchinson
• Frank Commendador opened the meeting at 6:00 and opened the discussion on the survey progress. He reported that
Zendo Kern has contributed the printing for 1000 copies of the survey and that we have them now ready for
distribution. Sharon Daun reported that the QLCC has contributed the printing of surveys to be used with youth and
that we now have 500 copies available for that purpose.
Discussion of how to implement Survey Monkey revealed that the free service would be more cumbersome than
would be effective. We voted to use the paid survey subscription and passed the hat with the result that we have
sufficient funds for about 3 months. We will pass the hat again when needed. Sharon volunteered to input the survey
on Survey Monkey. Nadine, Susan,Heidi and Patti agreed to take a test survey when the survey is on line.
Distribution of paper surveys was discussed. Nadine agreed to coordinate the survey. All planners should email
either Nadine or Patti with the number of surveys left at each location.
Susan,Heidi and Patti volunteered to enter completed paper surveys onto Survey Monkey
• Frank updated the group on the progress made with re-opening South Lauko Road. He has a meeting set up with
Warren Lee of Public Works to begin the process of investigating how to get the road re-opened. There is support for
the re-opening of the road from Fern Acres residents, S. Lauko Road residents, the school principal, and Mayor
Kenoi.
• Clyde gave a report from the Culture and History Working Group. They have nearly completed their section of the
planning document and are fine-tuning the report and considering modes of presentation.
• Patti announced the Pahoa Regional Town Center Community Meeting on August 21St at 6:00 in the Pahoa
Community Center and urged attendance.
• Dan brought up the issue of grass roots actions taken by individuals and groups and not brought through the Puna
Community Development Plan. He stated that these actions encourage County government and officials to continue
with the"squeaky wheel/favoritism"mode and to by-pass the PCDP. He states that it is essential that community
action be prioritized through the PCDP so that equitable services are delivered throughout Puna and the most urgent
needs are prioritized and served. Frank states that he has pursued these very necessary improvements on behalf of the
Community he serves and that it is solely due to his persistence that any action has taken place. He reports that the re-
opening of S. Lauko is different in that it is an existing county road. There was discussion of both viewpoints and it is
clear that more thought needs to be given to the problem.
Our next meeting will be September 125, 6:OOpm at the
Mountain View School Cafeteria
