Not only that, "increasing" setbacks to 40' seems like a waste of everyone's time and money when it's clear
that we need to rethink and add to that minimum asap due to sea level rise.
All it takes to see what's happening to the shoreline is to look at a photo you took of a tree close to the coastline 10-15
years ago and one of that same area today. My"homey" spot is kohanaiki. The trees I camped under for decades are
standing dead or completely washed away into the sea because of the change in the shoreline.
Talking about buying properties that are within dangerous and old-time setbacks is breathtaking if we do nothing else to
stop building too close to the shoreline. The costs are and will be more astronomical. I understand the issue of"takings',
but laws and needs change as climate, populations, communities and their needs change.
Building setbacks need to be increased. Forty feet is not an increase and only adds veracity to a paradigm that's costing
untold millions in repairs to seawalls (that never should have been built) and adjacent properties (also never should
have been built). To me, this commission is adding public (aka government) culpability and potentially additional
lawsuits by"cementing" this bad policy.
Mahalo for clarifying and for bringing meaningful setback limits and discussion to the table.
Sincerely,
Janice Palma-Glennie
F.O.F)ox 4849
Kailua-Kona,Hawaii 96745
i
