From: Molly Johnston
To: LPCtestimony
Subject: STR Testimony
Date: Saturday,March 30,2024 1:33:13 PM
Aloha,
My name is Molly Johnston and we have been listing our converted carport turned 2 bedded studio on Airbnb since
November 2021.What started off as an experiment to see if people would want to stay there has turned into a main
source of income for our family.
When we first listed the unit,I was working full time. Since then,we have had a baby and I have decided to do
freelancing work and manage the bookings. Our airbnb currently averages out to cover our mortgage which is so
huge, especially with a more sporadic paychecks.
We have used the space to host our own family and friends, but have been fortunate enough to welcome families of
neighbors and friends, people coming for short trips from a neighboring island,Ironman participants, cancer patients
on their once in a lifetime trip with friends, people needing a safe place to stay instead of driving back to Hilo late
and night and many more people in between! Our guests are encouraged to explore the island as we give them
guides to all of our trusted local businesses and items to enjoy a day exploring-coolers,reusable food storage,
chairs,ice,etc.
Our airbnb has changed the way we look at our home! We take a lot of pride in it and expect the same from our
guests. We love being able to talk story and share important information with them.
Of course I know that not all STRs are created equally and it's hard to control them all.We are fortunate that our
space is limited capacity and just for 2 guests. We do not supply with them with a lot of outdoor gathering space.
Please let me know if there is anything else we can say or do. Without that stream of income,we don't know if we
could stay on island.Or if we did,we would be in a desperate need for childcare while one of us is forced to work
more.
Best,
Molly
Sent from my iPhone
