Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966 (amended <br /> 2006)has been initiated with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)for the subject project and by <br /> way of this letter, the County of Hawaii Cultural Resources Commission intends to remain a consulting <br /> party, specifically as it may relate to resolution of adverse effects (36 CFR. 800.6), mitigation (40 CFR <br /> 1508.1(s), 1505.2 and 1505.3) and mitigation commitments(HAR 13-275-7). <br /> The project entails replacement of the existing Wai`aka Stream Bridge with a new bridge that would be <br /> approximately 53 feet wide by approximately 80 feet long to accommodate two travel lanes, one in each <br /> direction, a roadway shoulder or bike lane, and raised sidewalk. In addition, the roadway approaches to <br /> the bridge will be realigned to create a smooth transition to the replacement bridge. The intersection of <br /> Kawaihae Road and Kohala Mountain Road would be reconfigured to a roundabout. <br /> According to the Final Environmental Assessment (FEA), the Section 106 process is currently in the <br /> consultation process,which will be completed prior to filing the NEPA CatEx.
