Infrastructure Subcommittee “A” Mtg. 3/29/12
Meeting Minutes
March 29. 2012
Present: Giovanna Gherardi, Toni Withington, John
Winter, Bill Aierstuck and Andi Longpre
We have a new member for the Infrastructure Subcommittee “A”. We are
pleased to welcome Bill Aierstuck who has been living in North Kohala for the
past 3 years. Bill has a background in infrastructure and maintenance from The
National Parks Service. Bill said he is interested in the culture of our parks and
how they operate. Toni provided Bill with a short history of what has occurred
since the 1993 rezoning regarding improvements at the parks and some of the
history with the owners/developers.
Giovanna reported that she and Joe Carvahlo are working on the design for the
proposed website. She also reported that Keoka Park looks fabulous and that the
blessing is set for some time in May. She noted that Kapa’a also looks wonderful.
John corrected an error that was reported in the Kohala Mountain News: The
North Kohala National Guard Alumni not the Lions’ Club has adopted Kapa’a
Park, the Lions’ Club supports the Alumni.
Giovanna is still waiting to hear from Bob Fitzgerald, Director of Parks and
Recreation regarding a meeting here in North Kohala. Three primary topics will
be the focus of the meeting.
A. To present our non-profit North Kohala Park Management Program and
clarify how that will fit with his department as the “umbrella” for
stewardship of the parks.
B. to do a walk-through at Mahukona to see first hand the conditions at
the parks, especially those areas in need of repairs.
C. to provide an update on the work being done to address the feral cat
issue. Toni agreed to contact Wally Lau at the Mayor’s office to follow
through on obtaining his support.
Toni provided us with a draft flyer re: the issue of feral cats at Mahukona. To date
there have been 2 meetings and Kristi Kranz is developing an educational
program for the public schools re: how to responsibly address the issue of
unwanted felines and/or other unwanted pets. One suggestion is to develop a
drop-off location for unwanted felines so that they may be transported to the
Humane Society in Kamuela.
John will be meeting with the “Friends of Mahukona “ to assess materials
needed for the improvements projects. Bill offered to do a “cost assessment” for
the work done by the volunteers so that this informationcan be presented to the
P&R Dept.
