Comm. No. 2019-06
Parks, Water & Roads Group
Report to AC for February 2019
POLOLU: The bill for funding work on the trail will be before the Ways & Means Committee in the next
few weeks. The request is for $500,000 for safety work (including "hardening" of certain areas that are
deemed dangerous).
PRATT ROAD: We agreed that the next step is to proceed with Phase 2 of the clean-up/clearing and
maintenance project. This is the next step westward toward Old Halaula Mill Road and Union Mill
Road. The tentative date for Phase 2 is at the end of March. We are looking into ways to fund clean-up
and maintenance of Pratt Rd.
I'OLE: Sarah recounted the dangerous effects that the recent mud -slide had on our community.
John reported that he had spoken with Don Smith (DOT) about having DOT work with 'lole to develop
improved engineering practices for the future. Andrew Stevens noted that there is another road
option with regard to this problem (it runs parallel to the highway and comes out at the end of the
Middle School). John said that he would contact Capt. Evangelista as to how to have that road
designated as an emergency route.
DOT: Members of our group who attended the January 31s' meeting with DOT Chief Engineer, Don
Smith and his deputy Harry Takiue discussed the progress, to date, on promises made to fix some
problems. Please refer to Toni's article in the February 22,2019 (pg 9) KMN. Of the 8 listed areas of
concern there has been success with the tree removal at Halawa Gulch and installing a cross -walk
pedestrian notice on the highway between the elementary/high school (makai side) and the nursery on
the mauka/mountain side. Our group will continue to monitor the commitments made and review the
process in one month.
HALAULA WELL: Toni reported that the DWS wants to have a community meeting to inform residents
of their plans and the process of obtaining bids to do the work that will affect area residents.
NEXT MEETING: March 27, 2019 Wednesday, Old Judiciary Bldg. at 5 p.m.
