Please read the duties summary and minimum qualification requirements. Answer all questions completely and be sure to sign the application. Print legibly in blue or black ink, only. 2. A copy of your current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification and driver's license must be attached and submitted by the deadline. 3. A swim and skills test are required prior to employment. This testis pass/fail. The testis as follows: a. Swim 300 yards continuously, in under 7 minutes demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. b. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: i. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face maybe in or out of the water. Swimming goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet -first, or head -first, to retrieve a 10-pound brick from deep end. ii. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so still able to get a breath. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. c. Lifeguard -specific skills assessment; please bring your lifeguarding hip pack and CPR mask. 4. Failure to complete all steps, including not signing the application, not swim testing, failing the skills assessment, or not attending pre -employment orientation will result in ineligibility for contract employment. Minimum Qualification Requirements: Training and Experience: • A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school. License and Certification Requirements (Certificates must be maintained on a current basis): • Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate; or • other current equivalent certification, • a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's Certificate as applicable to the position, (required for NAS Pool) • ability to travel independently to various geographic locations. This requirement may be fulfilled by the possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class 3), a valid comparable driver's license, or use of other means of transportation that meets position needs. Knowledge of: • Techniques and methods of lifesaving; • techniques of emergency life support including mouth-to-mouth and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation; • first aid principles and practices; • artificial respiration; • methods and practices of filtering and purifying swimming pool water; • cleaning methods and materials and equipment used; and • report writing. Ability to: • Rescue persons from the water, • administer first aid and CPR; • recognize when ill or injured persons require professional medical care; • prepare clear and concise operational and incident reports; • enforce regulations; • conduct and instruct aquatic classes and activities; • deal tactfully and effectively with the public; and • read and follow written instructions.
