CALL TO ORDER
Chairperson Patti Barry called the meeting to order.
MINUTES
No minutes from May 27 meeting.
TREASURERS REPORT
P. Barry Checks for $300 (Puamana Website), $900 (DV 101 Powerpoint) and $250
(brochures) were paid using remaining funds in 2003-04 budget.

CORRESPONDENCE
P. Barry referred to correspondence from Chief Mahuna regarding designation of
Detectives Konanui and Rodrigues as ex-officio members, and letters from Wendell
HatadatoEdTairaandJayKimuraregardinggapsandconcerns.Shereportedthat
Wendell will be meeting with Mayor Kim and also attending the July meeting.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A. Proposed amendment to Commission By-Laws Commissioners will review
bylaws for recommended changes before next meeting.
B. Posters from contest and pictures K. Kudlo will pick up posters from Oahu on
July 13.
C. Ex-Officio members Wendell will follow up on whether members need to be
sworn in.
D. Hawaii County News Articles A. Moon reported that she is now receiving a
copy of the newsletter. She will follow up with getting the website address
included in all articles submitted to the newsletter.
REPORTS
A.DVIAT A. Moon reported that the island-wide meeting on the 18th was
postponed, next island-wide meeting date yet to be determined based on
feedback from West Hawaii. West Hawaii will be getting a new chairperson.
Public Awareness Committee will meet on July 7 at the Hilo Lagoon Center.
A. Moon told the commission that she was expecting a zip drive version of some
original artwork that will be used for the public awareness theatre project.
B. Public Relations A. Moon reported on FVAC website. Char will follow up with
keeping the information on the County website current. She also gave a report
on the card/brochure project, including updating information and means of
distribution.
C. Laws/Policy Reform K. Kudlo will contact Jack Manor or Holly Kaainaaina for a
report on the coalition meeting in West Hawaii. She will also contact Andrea
Alden-McClulum at 329-2910 ext. 23 for information on the West Hawaii Legal
Procedures meetings.
D. DV-101 Power Point Presentation Lenore will be at the July meeting to do a
10-minute presentation.
E. Gaps, concerns and solutions Commission will await response from Wendell
Hatada to clarify various concerns sent to the Mayor. This information, along
with feedback from Chief Mahuna and Jay Kimura will be part of the report the
commission will be forwarding to the Mayor in their presentation. P. Barry told
the commission that she has been communicating with Wendell regarding the
ongoing report.
Commission members will also be contacting Rose from the County Immigration
Office regarding immigrant women and ESL..
Janice Betts from Legal Aid will be invited to address Elder Abuse.
NEW BUSINESS
A.ContinuingandnewprojectsproposedforthenextfiscalyearTherewas
discussion on whether the commission felt they had enough on their plate for now
that still needs to be completed before establishing new goals/projects.
Commissionersdiscussedthepostercontestproject-K.Kudlosaidthatshewould
coordinate that project again.
Commissioners also discussed DVIAT, and possibly tying in projects together during
DV Awareness month. They also discussed changing the perception on DV from
negative to a more positive one, and how to accomplish that.
New Business discussion ended with a commission member suggesting that the
commission ask themselves why they are on this committee, and what do they want
to achieve by being on the committee. I think we need to have a clear vision of what
we want to achieve before we do anything.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
P. Barry asked the commission to bring their thoughts on the above to the July meeting.
Next meeting will be held on July 29, 2004, at 9:30 am at the Prosecuting Attorneys
Office in Hilo and Kona.
