REQUEST: <br /> The Office of the Corporation Counsel requests the attached draft resolution, which authorizes the Mayor to <br /> enter into a multi-year agreement for.three (3) years with the law firm of Leong Kunihiro Brooke & Kim, be <br /> placed on the September 6, 2022 Finance Committee agenda. The deadline for the 9/6/22 Finance <br /> Committee is August 17, 2022 at noon. <br /> B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): <br /> Pursuant to HRS §103D-304 (procurement of professional services), the law firm of Leong Kunihiro Brooke & <br /> Kim was duly selected to provide professional legal services for all of the County's workers' compensation <br /> matters. The Office of the Corporation Counsel does not currently have the expertise, personnel, and <br /> resources to provide the necessary level of legal services needed to address workers' compensation <br /> matters. The Office of the Corporation Counsel wishes to enter into a three (3) year agreement with this law <br /> firm for services. A multi-year agreement will allow the County to employ Special Counsel that can provide <br /> services on a continuing and consistent basis. As it relates to workers' compensation claims, many of the <br /> claims have the potential to last years depending on the scope and complexity of the issues involved. It <br /> would be in the County's best interest to employ a Special Counsel who is familiar with the issues and cases <br /> involved with the County and to maintain consistency in managing and handling such claims.
