REQUEST: The Department of Information Technology requests five (5) additional full time positions, as we seek candidates with experience and willingness to serve, in order to strengthen the County's resiliance in today's computing environment. B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): The need for cybersecurity is longstanding, yet today's computing environment requires a level of attention that put strain on existing workforces. Staff time and attention tends to shift toward maintaining operations, by keeping servers, workstations, and networks up and running. As operational initiatives contintue to expand locally and in the cloud, daily verification of security systems and reviewing pages and pages of security log files becomes an afterthought.... and consequentially, put on the back burner. Security must hold its importance front and center, especially as new technologies and additional services evolve. As new products and capabilities are added to the County's computing portfolio, the staff responsibilities increase and the attack surface grow larger. When the attack surface grows, so do the methods that are used by the threat actors. Additional staff are requested so that the County is able to maintain operational standards, increase its vigilance in cybersecurity, and not allow security to be an afterthought. If approved, added staff will focus on managing defense -in-depth strategies, defending and maintaing service availability, confidentiality, and other aspects needed to increase cyber maturity.
