fishpond cleaning and restoration, Hawaiian language lessons, 1st aid and CPR training, sailing and
canoe paddling, recreational activities, and more.
To date, Pilikulaiwi has successfully hosted 11 cohorts totaling 290 keiki from various communities
in Hilo/East Hawal'i with the number of returnees exceeding 47%. The average number of
participants in each cohort ranges between 20 to 25. We believe that the safe space that we create
along with the affordability of the program, and the various types of hands-on learning is what
contributes to our high return rate. With additional resources, P&R staff will be able to fund future
programs and provide opportunities for more keiki in East Hawai'l. Through the commitment of the
Pilikulaiwi staff, the support of administrators, and the hospitatity of partner organizations and
subject matter experts, they hope to continue to build on their successes.
To expand the reach of the OD2AS funding, Palama Settlement has budgeted $12,000 to be provided
to the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation.
These federal funds will be used for the cost of planning, designing, and implementing substance
free educational, community service events such as Plli Kulaiwi and Ulu `()hla on Hawaii island in
2024.
