COUNTY OF HAWAI`I :•� �,`'"=' / • STATE OF HAWAI`I <br /> ••• OF•HF•- <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 531 24 <br /> A RESOLUTION REAFFIRMING THE SISTER CITY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN <br /> THE COUNTY OF HAWAI`I AND HUALIEN COUNTY IN TAIWAN AND URGING <br /> THE MAYOR TO ENTER INTO A FORMAL AGREEMENT TO RE-ESTABLISH SAID <br /> RELATIONSHIP. <br /> WHEREAS, in recognition of their shared historical and cultural heritage and similar <br /> natural beauty, the County of Hawai`i and Hualien County, Taiwan, mutually established a Sister <br /> City relationship in 1971, intended to foster mutual understanding and partnership between the <br /> two regions; and <br /> WHEREAS,though the Sister City relationship has been dormant for a number of years, <br /> there is now renewed interest from both parties to re-establish and strengthen this important <br /> international relationship; and <br /> WHEREAS, this Sister City relationship offers reciprocative opportunities to promote <br /> and support cultural exchanges, including arts, education, and sports, develop tourism initiatives, <br /> and collaborate on environmental sustainability projects,thereby enriching both communities; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS,the mutual desire to revive and maintain this Sister City relationship is <br /> based on shared interests in cultural diversity, economic development, and global cooperation; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, Chapter 2, Article 31, Section 2-165(a) of the Hawai`i County Code 1983 <br /> (2016 Edition, as amended) states, in part, that sister city relationships "shall be established by <br /> the adoption of a council resolution approving the establishment of the sister city tie and the <br /> signing of a formal agreement between the mayor of the County of Hawai`i and the appropriate <br /> public official of the proposed sister city that such ties exist"; now,therefore, <br />
