This project aims to install, test, and analyze smart intersection solutions at five
high-risk intersections in Hilo, particularly near public schools. The goal is to enhance safety by using
artificial intelligence (Al) and video analytics to monitor and improve intersection behavior. The total
project cost is estimated at$4.2 million, with $3.6 million funded by a federal grant and $840,000
provided by the Hawaii Department of Transportation as the local cost share.
B.
