In 2,000 characters or less, describe the project.
Founded in 1983 as a program of the Island of Hawaii YMCA, and becoming an independent organization in 2006, Ku'ikahi
Mediation Center has a 42-year track record of providing conflict prevention and resolution services to our diverse
communities. We are the sole non-profit mediation center serving East Hawai'i, and 1 of only 5 in the state. Our purpose is
"Finding Solutions, Growing Peace." Hawai'i Island leaders, employers, employees, and entrepreneurs need more local
opportunities for top-notch training, especially in the areas of conflict prevention and resolution. Investing in skills -building
at the front end helps prevent and mitigate problems at the back end. Effective collaborative processes, communication
strategies, and conflict management skills are critical for citizens, since our county and state are facing complex societal
issues like global pandemics, climate change, and aging populations. In order to deal with increasing trends like polarization
and business disruptions from new technologies, citizens need to work smarter together to problem -solve sticky situations.
This CRF will be used to conduct a "Conflict Prevention & Resolution Training Series" during FY 2025-2026. These 10 half -
day workshops may include: 1) "Resilience at Work" with Ami Kunimura 2) "Reclaiming Personal Sovereignty in Moments of
Conflict" with Shelby Morrison 3) "Civility in the Workplace" with Diane Petropulos 4) "Master of the StormT"': Navigating
Misunderstanding, Disagreement, Even Conflict" with Athena Lou & Eric Smith 5) "Enhancing Workplace Dynamics Through
DISC Profiles" with Arliss Dudley -Cash 6) "How to Effectively Work Together as a Non -Profit Board" with Julie Mitchell 7)
"Meetings that Work" with Athena Lou & Eric Smith 8) "Respect in the Workplace & The Power of Stories" with Anne Marie
Smoke & Owen Tanamoto 9) "Team Adventure: Desert Disaster" with Athena Lou & Eric Smith 10) "Myers -Briggs: To Better
Understand Yourself & Others" with Joan Shafer.
* 50.501(c)(3) Mission Statement
OUR MISSION: We empower people to come together --to talk and to listen, to explore options, and to find their own best
solutions. To achieve this mission, we offer mediation, facilitation, and training to strengthen the ability of diverse individuals
and groups to resolve interpersonal conflicts and community issues. OUR VISION: A peaceful community where people
routinely seek common ground. OUR VALUES: Communication / Collaboration / Confidentiality / Courtesy / Competence.
* 51. In 1,000 characters or less, explain how the 501(c)(3) is connected to the project.
Ku'ikahi is conducting the project. This training series is designed to develop individuals, teams, and leaders in public
sectors (county, state, and federal government); private sectors (small, medium, and large businesses); and non-profit
sectors (health care, human services, and others). The training series offers unique opportunities to local public, private,
and non-profit workforces and volunteers to obtain world -class trainings: 1) from highly skilled trainers, 2) on island, 3) at
affordable tuition rates (including Ku'ikahi scholarships), 4) in specialized subject areas, and 5) offered nowhere else in
Hawai'i. We know of no similar local projects sponsored by other organizations. UH-Hilo's Center for Community
Engagement has ceased offering non-credit classes in professional development. Hawaii Community College EDvance is
only offering online asynchronous courses. Ku'ikahi is filling a training gap in locally provided workplace and community
development.
