P_-1RKS & RECREATIOK <br /> County Band <br /> Progress in Meeting Program Objectives <br /> FY 2000-01 <br /> 1 Provide musical services for the island residents and visitors and work with <br /> community orgarnzat~ons to enrich Big Island events by performing 40 performance <br /> services annually (2 rehearsal services to 1 performance service ratio) <br /> As of 2/28/01, 28 performance services or 70% have already been provided <br /> this fiscal year. <br /> <br /> 2 Provide monthly Mo'oheau Bandstand concerts that are <br /> a) Entertaining, by including light and popular music in each program, <br /> A wide variety of music is offered every month. Traditional marches, show <br /> tunes, movie scores, Hawaiian songs, symphonic arrangements of <br /> classical pieces, pop music collaborations are usually Included along wfth <br /> seasonal pieces (Christmas, Memorial Day, etc.) <br /> b) Educational by providing historical, musical, or interesting information about <br /> selections, <br /> Background of the selection, composer, or anecdotes, are always given <br /> prior to playing the piece. <br /> c) Musically challenging and stimulate growth for the musicians in the band and <br /> audience by programming selections from nationally recommended lists (e.g <br /> National Band Association Selective Music List); <br /> The selections that are performed are all at the collegiate or professional <br /> level. <br /> d) Musical opporturnties that feature community groups, musicians, soloists, <br /> conductors, and young student musicians, <br /> In may we will feature a high school student on a solo piece accompanied <br /> by the band. We have not been able to accomplish this on a monthly <br /> basis, but will work towards meeting it quarterly. <br /> e) Historically significant (95 year tradition) <br /> The Mo'oheau Bandstand has been a Hilo Bay landmark for 95 years. A <br /> brief history of the band is given at each concert. <br /> <br />
