The bill to increase the minimum real estate taxes to $100 Page 1 of 2
Safiarlk, Gary
From: Jacobs, Jeff [jeff.jacobs@attws.com]
sent: Thursday, July 05, 2001 9:31 AM
fio: 'gsafarik@interpac.net'
subject: The bill to increase the minimum real estate taxes to $100
Hawaii County Council
finance Committee
25 Aupuni Street
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Subject: The bill to increase the minimum real estate taxes to $100 proposed by
Councilman Curtis Tyler.
®ear Council Person:
The current tax rate for vacant (unimproved) land is $10.00 per $1,000 of assessed
valuation.
The current assessed value of lots in Kalapana Gardens in $100.
With the proposed minimum tax of $100 ~a The tax levy on Kalapana Gardens lots would be
$1,000 per $1,000. That's one hundred times greater than the currently established tax
rate. That would be gross discrimination.
I respectfully request that land recently covered by lava be removed from the tax roles until
infrastructure is restored to provide access and water service. This will save the county tax
department the incremental cost of servicing these properties.
Actually the discriminatory taxes collected since 1992 should be refunded.
There is no evidence that adding one tax lot to the current tax roles would increase the
operating costs of the tax department by anything near $100. The Council should initiate a
study to determine the actual incremental cost of adding a single tax lot to the tax roles.
The minimum tax should (at the most) be based on the incremental cost of adding a tax lot
to the tax roles.
I respectfully request that the ~lawaii C®unty ~®uncil kill the
bill t® increase in minimum real estate taxes to X100
pr®p®sed by councilman Curtis Eyler.
Thank You!
7/6/01
