A. ~t1YE9~S
Chairman
Chief EXecuGve OPficee
August 13, 2001
Chris Yuen, Esq.
Planning Director
25 Aupuni St., Ism. 109
Hilo, HI 96720
Deaz Chris:
If you can believe the local newspapers, it states that your Planning Committee has not as
yet set a date to vote on the proposed changes for updating the County's General Plan,
which I believe is done every decade. Therefore, I am taking the liberty of asking you to
review aa~ oversight, which I understand tools place between the Steve Yarnashiro
Administration and the vibrant Harry I~irri Administration. It is all part of page 9 of the
C. Erewer recommendations to the County of Hawaii's General Plan. Hopefully it is not
too late to modify this action, which will no longer be C. Erewer's but will be a °equest
by a new company called D. Buyers Enterprises, LLC that has no ambitious goals, but
only a passion to help our senior citizens.
As you know, I am aaixious to find a way to build an assisted living facility in a smaller
azea adjoining the Honomu village. It is also important that we develop that area in a
meaningful way, as most of the adjoining land is owned by native I°Iawaiian
organizations and we want to set a good example as they have liberties for building that
the rest of us do not enjoy. It is going to take a while before I can get all the required
permits to build a senior citizens village, which is so needed in this County and in this
State. I want to have a very special type of senior citizen home with no air conditioning
and Hawaiian-type architecture with small gardens for any and all residents of this
assisted living endeavor. If senior citizens grow flowers, vegetables, or fruit in these
small gardens, it will do wonders for their morale and their sense of well-being. 1!!Iy
mother and father maintained a garden until they were 95 years of age and he lived to be
97 and my mother lived to be 102. The garden kept them happy, useful and close to flee
earth.
This assisted and independent living facility is all about wellness and a sense of well-
being and a social life that can be fostered for people whose spouse may have died or
whose family has moved away, or whose family wants to have separate living options
enabling retired parents to live a separate life from their children with people nearer their
own age and vintage.
