Chris Yuea~, Esq.
August 13, 2001
Page 2
This undertaking is a lot of work and we must find very skilled people to help maintain
these facilities and help senior citizens live a full life. Hopefully I can help this happen
I now have the land, but "nothing ventured nothing gained." yVe need a chance to make
this happen which is deserving of our County's General Plan. I have spoken to our
Mayor about this need on several occasions and he is a strong supporter of independent
and assisted living facilities for the aged, and the demographics reveal more senior
citizens every year. Said in a somewhat humorous way, it is a sure growth industry!
Just yesterday, in the ~Ionolulu Star-Bulletin, there was an incredible article which must
have been written for me to send to you! It is entitled, "Help iTVanted, Crisis in l;iderly
Care," but more important is a matrix on the inside page about I-Iawaii's growth. The
statistics. are unbelievable for growth of the senior citizens population age 65 and over,
which is the second highest in the Nation. The population growth percentage for age 85
and over is the highest in the Nation. The tragedy is that this State has done very little
compared with most mainland States and we need to catch up rapidly. I only wish I had

more experience and expertise in this field.
I can see why page 9 of C. brewer's recommendations to the County of Hawaii's Genera].
Plan was rejected with respect to Honomu, First of all, the request was for too many
acres (158) for low-density urban development. I am only interested in 130 acres, which
is all on the same side of the road gust above the ballpark in Honomu. Enclosed is a map
of that area and we have highlighted in yellow the land that would be most appropriate:
for a senior citizens facility. I do not know what the zoning should be for a new type of
independent and assisted living facility, but probably medium-density urban, as I want to
provide little gardens for senior citizens who desire or need that kind of outdoor exercise
and sense of accomplishment. If there is some way this plan could be modified at this
crucial point in time, I would be most appreciative. Since I just formed this new
company 10 days ago, I do not have elaborate plans, but I will not have this opportunity
for another 10 years, and I do have a passion for beginning this meaningful new endeavor
for senior citizens. Since this County General Plan is only revised every decade, we need
to move quickly to at least have flee opportunity of developing a retirement facility next
to an agricultural plantation village like Honomu, which needs assistance. The County
moved very quickly in 1997 when I revealed my plans to move my C€~rporate
Headquarters to Hilo and I believe I dad not disappoint the Planning Commission who
voted unanimously for a dream I shared with them.
In addition to the article in yesterday's Star Bulletin, I am enclosing a requested
recommendation that C. Erewer made to the County that needs to be changed and an
interesting letter I received recently from Gary Safarilc. In fact, I have received numerous
communiques from people who are hungry for some type of senior citizen facilities and I
don't think you want to be the one who is blocking such a needed facility for oug
wellness island, Please forgive me for sounding so urgent, but it will be 10 years before
there will be another General Plan update for the County of Hawaii.
