July 18, 2002
RE: Request for Qpen and Conservation from Kawaihae to Polulu Valley
And Access from Akoni Pule Hwy to the Kohala Shoreline -Public Hearing
the Hawaii County General Plan be in respect of these efforts of Hui Mamalahoa which may not
be known to the Council Committee on Planning.
In protection of our past ancestors and the spiritual connections native Hawaiians have to areas
of concerny our Native Hawaiian lifestyle still practiced under the initial efforts of
Hui Mamalahoa should not be in disturbance, inclusive of our rights under PASH.
To define disturbance on preservation of Native Hawaiian issues is where a division amongst
even native Hawaiians may very well be present aside from Developer and non native Hawaiians
in a community. For it is economic development or recovery that puts this as a wedge amongst
ourselves but it does not uplift the spiritual connection of our ancestors and instead compromises
the respect, dignity and value of our gathering and spiritual practices.
VVe ask that your committee be in protection and respect of our rights for gathering and spiritual
access specifically in Kohala as did Former Governor George Ariyoshi did under his official
direction honoring Hui Marxaalahoa. By doing so you preserve our heritage and resources and
take a stand for the value you personally hold for future generations of Kohala.
Respectfully,
+~~~~R~
Dannette K.
