fruit from Hawaii they think may be irradiated. You may be hurting many
farmers economically. Without a clear economic study of the effects of
irradiated fruit on the economy, it seems foolhardy to proceed.
5. The net resuli of building an irradiation plant on the Big Island seems to be
moving in the direction of having the economy of Hawaii further controlled by

external factors instead of moving toward aself-reliant economy. Without

economic control of the economy, it would be next to impossible for Hawaii to
move toward political sovereignty. You Council Members need to take

seriously the passing of Public Law 103-150 and other expressions by Church
bodies in Hawaii that have recognized the injustice to the Kanaka maoli in the
illegal overthrow of the independent Hawai i in 1893. You have an obligation

to make decisions that make a transition from a colonized Hawaii to a

sovereign Hawaii. I have a funny feeling that you are being wooed by big
business interests that have much to profit by leasing land to farmers. Instead

of the big businesses taking the risk of growing tropical fruit for export, they
will let the farmers carry the risk. Don't try to fool the people of the Big Island
by the slogan of "a diversified agricultural economy." Help make the Big
Island self-sufficient in the food we eat instead. Thank you!
