Pauiius & Associates/Isomedix for subdivision and site plan approvals (the 1°Application"), the Planning Board proceeded to educate itself about the gamma radiation. sterilization process in general and Isomedix. :in particular. The Board requested, and received, advice from the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the New York State Department of Labor, Radiological Unit. It received a Fu11 Environmental Assessment Fcrm from Isomedix and requested, and received, supplemental answers from Isomedix to *:he E.A.F. The Board inquired of local officials in municipalities vrh~re Isomedix had existing facilities, and toured an operzti.^.g Lso:,,vdia facility in Whippany, New Jersey. In additicn, the Board hired an independent. consultant, Dr. Robert Berlin, to advise the Board. Dr.. Berlin is a professor of engineering at Manhattan College and i)as 35 years experience in the nuclear/ environmental field. Dr. Berlin has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the City University of New Yurk, a Masters degree in Engineering Science from Rennselear Polytechnic Institute, a Masters degree in Industrial Engineering from New York University, and a Doctorate in Public Health from Columbia University. He is also the Reactor Administrator of a nuclear facility at Manhattan College. Finally, the Board held a SEAR public hearing prior to making the determination of significance.
