Ed Johnston
Alia Point Nursery
P.O. Box 636
Pepe`ekeo, HI 96783
Bobby Jean Leithead-Todd
Planning Committee
Hawaii County Council
25 Aupuni Street
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Subject.• General Plan proposed designation for heavy industry on Pepe`ekeo Point
Dear Ms. Todd:
The draft County General Plan has within it a proposal to add an
industrial designation to the area adjacent to the Hilo Coast Power Plant.
This proposed designation is extremely inappropriate. That area cur-
rently is highly agricultural with expanding tropical fruit farms, ginger,
taro, sweet corn, and other vegetable and herb crops. In addition the area
is becoming more and more residential and that residential plan includes
extensive shoreline access for people who fish and use other ocean and
stream resources.
The history of the Hilo Coast Power Company is as an agricultural
enterprise in that the plant was originally allowed in order to utilize an
agricultural by-product- bagasse. This is no longer the case and while
the present coal burning plant continues for now, the idea of allowing
expansion is just not in keeping with the overwhelming current land use.
Please urge the Council to take out any proposed non-agricultural,

industrial use of these scenic lands.
Sccincerely,
C~
E Johnston
Comm.
