SAFE COMMUNITY HIGHWAY SAFETY PROGRAM <br /> QUARTERLY REPORT <br /> <br /> HAWAII COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT <br /> <br /> PROJECT TITLE: SPEED ENFORCEMENT PROJECT <br /> Priority Area: I Area: Speeding <br /> SOLUTION <br /> To enforce speeding laws by: <br /> 1. Conducting approximately 100 highly visible speed checkpoints to include <br /> enforcement operations targeting illegal or "outlaw" racing in affected districts and <br /> during late night peak illegal racing times. <br /> 2. Issuing approximately 2400 citations for speeding. <br /> 3. Issuing approximately 400 citations for other violations. <br /> 4. Affecting approximately 20 arrests during enforcement efforts for warrant violations <br /> and other offenses. <br /> 5. Purchase 8 laser units to upgrade our equipment inventory and enable our Department <br /> to improve our speed enforcement program. <br /> The Statewide Traffic Commanders Coalition has agreed that speed enforcement should <br /> be coordinated statewide. <br /> Goals and Objectives of Project. <br /> The goal of this project is to reduce the number of motor vehicle collisions resulting in <br /> fatalities caused by speeding drivers. <br /> GRANT PERIOD RESULTS: <br /> (FINAL REPORT) <br /> • Conducted 222 highly visible speed checkpoints, including enforcement <br /> operations targeting illegal or "outlaw" racing. <br /> • Issued 1104 citations for speeding, 976 other citations, 24 seat belt citations, 9 <br /> child restraint citations, 21 DUI arrests and 64 other arrests to include 7 arrests <br /> for racing on highways. <br /> • Purchased five laser units to upgrade our equipment inventory. <br /> <br />
