SAFE COMMUNITY HIGHWAY SAFETY PROGRAM <br /> QUARTERLY REPORT <br /> <br /> HAWAII COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT <br /> <br /> PROJECT TITLE: SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD TRAINING <br /> <br /> Priority Area: I Area: Pedestrian Safety <br /> <br /> SOLUTION <br /> <br /> To increase pedestrian safety in school zones: <br /> 1. Provide two training sessions, one in East Hawaii and one in West Hawaii, consisting <br /> of a two-hour pedestrian safety course to 40 school crossing guards and atwo-hour <br /> senior citizen pedestrian safety course for senior citizen organizations. <br /> <br /> 2. Conduct training sessions in August 2003 and August 2004. <br /> <br /> 3. Utilize overtime to fund two coordinators for these trainings. <br /> <br /> 4. Hawaii County Police Department to fund program afrer first three years (This is the <br /> second year of the three-year program). <br /> 5. Hawaii County Police Department to provide facilities for training sessions. <br /> <br /> 6. School Crossing Guard coordinator or designee will conduct 4 school crossing guazd <br /> inspections per month utilizing County funds. <br /> State Goals and Objectives of Project. <br /> <br /> The goal of this project is to increase pedestrian safety in the 20 school zones serviced by <br /> school crossing guards and amongst senior citizens. <br /> <br /> The objective of this project is to provide pedestrian safety training to 40-school crossing <br /> guards and to the various senior citizen groups and senior citizens island wide. <br /> GRANT PERIOD RESULTS: <br /> (FINAL REPORT): <br /> • School Crossing guard training conducted on July 24, 2003 in West Hawaii and <br /> July 29, 2003 in East Hawaii. A total of 41 guazds received training. <br /> • Conducted 130 school crossing guard inspections utilizing County funds. <br /> <br />
