According to the latest
US census conducted in 2000, it is estimated that there are 26,122 older individuals 60
years old and over in Hawaii County. This number of older individuals accounts for
approximately 17.6% of the Big Island's total population of 148,677. Moreover, Hawaii
County experienced the highest rate of increase (25.9%) in the 60+ population during the
last ten years. Maui County came in second showing an increase of 24.9% and Kauai and
Honolulu counties were almost tied at a rate of increase of 17.9% and 17.5%
respectively. The 10 -year rate of increase of the 60+ population for the whole state was
19.2%. Hawaii County represents about 12% of the State of Hawaii's 60+ population
and ranks second to City and County of Honolulu in its share of the total aging
population. With the exception of Kalawao County, the Big Island had the highest
median age of 38.6 in 2000 and its median age had increased from 28.1 in 1980 and 34.4
in 1990.
The same data source showed that 60+ individuals are still concentrated in the
South Hilo district of the Big Island representing about 39.1 % of the 60+ population on
It
the island. North Kona ranked next with about 4,575 (15.51%) older adults 60+ followed
Comm. No.C ?,1 4
Ref. To: Ptesewted
Page - 1 - of 11 Ref. aatewl2004
