South Kohala <br />had the highest <br />growth of the <br />older population <br />between <br />1999-2000. <br />Profile of of Hawaii's Older Population 0 <br />by Upper Puna registering a total of 2,957 (11.32%) older adults. While North Kona <br />showed the greatest rate of increase (117.74%) between 1980 and 1990, latest census <br />figures showed that South Kohala held the highest rate of change of 73.20% between <br />1990 and 2000. In fact, of all county districts, only South Kohala surpassed the 45% rate <br />of change. North and South Hilo districts showed the least percent change in their 60+ <br />populations during the last ten years. <br />According to the US Census, the proportion of 60+ individuals residing in rural <br />areas was highest in PSA4 when compared with other PSAs. Hawaii County's 75 years old and over <br />age group represented 28% and 35% of the total older population in the 1990 and 2000 <br />censuses respectively. Due to significant medical improvements, our older residents are <br />living longer and healthier hence the trend pegging the 85+ age group (oldest -old) as the <br />fastest growing group in our older population. The rate of increase of the 85+ age group <br />in both the 1990 and 2000 censuses has been at over the 80% mark. The male to female <br />Page -2 -of 11 <br />
